Cindy birthed a litter of eleven puppies - One Week of Age
December 15, 2009
Puppies are growing. One puppy, a small male was not thriving and became hypothermic. Two days ago, we removed him from the litter and are hand-raising him in our house. Unfortunately, this puppy's digestive system did not tolerate the "puppy milk replacer" and we needed to euthanize him. Currently (12/19/09) we have ten remaining healthy puppies: one male and nine females! Below is the pile of 10 puppies at 11 days of age. Eyes not open yet. -
- Two Weeks of Age
December 22, 2009
The puppies are starting to open their eyes; they are growing fast and becoming more active. The picture below shows puppies at 18 days of age piling up to get at Cindy's"food bar"! Their eyes are all open and they are getting more active. Their individual weights average 3.5 pounds. Being a good "puppy mom" includes feeding the puppies and cleaning up the puppies' waste products so their bed stays nice and fresh!

- Three Weeks of Age
December 29, 2009
At 22 days of age, we started supplementing the puppies' diet with "starter" puppy food. At this very young age, commercial puppy chow is too harsh for their digestive system. We make a mash starter puppy food consisting of a mixture of evaporated canned milk, baby rice cereal, and canned baby food (turkey & rice). Initially, the puppies only get a taste on their tongue.
By the time they are 25 days old, we are feeding this supplemental "starter" diet twice a day; each puppy getting about 1 tablespoon of mash. Over the next days, we will be increasing the quantity of this diet and then start mixing in commercial puppy chow.

Above: Two puppies at 23 days of age, exploring their supplemental "starter" diet.

Above: A view from above of some of the puppies at 25 days of age.

Above: Closer view of one puppy at 25 days of age. Notice her full collar and four white socks. With time her nose will elongate to form a typical collie face and after about 9 weeks her ears will "set"..
- Four Weeks of Age

First de-worming medication completed. - Five Weeks of Age
January 12, 2010
We moved puppies the from horse barn to dog kennel area when they turned five weeks of age.. Now the puppies have a lot more room to run and roam. Buddy is housed right beside the puppies -- separated by a fence. We let Cindy in periodically to feed the puppies, but basically the puppies are almost weaned and get 90% of their nutrients from Purina Exclusive puppy food that has been moistened with a bit of canned milk and water. Puppies are fed three times a day.

Here the puppies (@39 days of age) are consuming their lunch. Each puppy has a separate food compartment on the trays, but often they check out their neighbor's compartment which is much tastier than their own!

Five "girl" puppies (39 days old) just a looking and wanting to get out and roam!
