Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are your collies big or the small
type?
A: Our collies are rough coated standard sized collie dogs;
typically the adults will weigh 50-70 pounds when they reach
maturity. The "small collies" sometimes called "miniature"
collies are known as "Shetland Sheep Dogs" or Shelties.
Shelties differ from our dogs in both size and temperament.
Q: What is the price of your puppies?
A: $500 per puppy. You can reserve a specific puppy by paying
a non-refundable deposit of $250.
Q: What can you tell me about the health of your
puppies?
A: We take our puppies to the veterinarian for a
health check at seven weeks of age and will certify their
health at the time of sale at eight weeks. Prior to
the sale puppies will be de-wormed and have their first
series of vaccinations.
Q: I have heard that collies tend to have eye and
hip problems when they get older. How can I be certain
that the puppy I buy will not be plagued with these
problems?
A: Nothing is certain and we can not guarantee that your
puppy will not have health issues as he/she ages. All
we can say is that in this genetic line that we are using,
those health problems have been minimal and largely
non-existent to the best of our knowledge. Both the
dam and sire of this litter are very healthy and have not
exhibited any serious health problems. We think that
good diets, exercise, and a clean environment go a long way
to ensure longevity and health.
Q: How would you assess the temperament of your
puppies?
A: Starting about 3 weeks of age and gradually increasing
until the time the puppies are sold, we spend a lot of time
socializing the puppies. That includes picking them
up, playing with them, providing toys for entertainment.
Especially after about six weeks we try and expose them to
various environments for short periods of time -- in the
car, in the house, outside around our farm, etc. We
think all of this socialization is important in promoting
social and psychological health as young puppies and later
as adult dogs. Our goal is to raise puppies that form
strong attachments to their owners and will be loyal and
faithful companions for life.
Q: Do you ship and sell your puppies out
of state?
A: We do not like to send our puppies to persons we have not met or who have
not visited our farm. Primarily we sell our puppies in the
state of Virginia or in neighboring states.
Q: Do you sell your puppies to retail
pet shops?
A: Our practice has been to sell all of our puppies to individuals
whom we have met. We are concerned that our puppies find good
homes and that their prospective owner is a good match for our
puppies.
Q: I live in a small apartment and do
not have a yard. Assuming that I take my collie out for a walk
once a day, will I have a good experience as a collie owner?
A: Collies are large dogs and need room to run and explore.
Keeping your collie in a small apartment room with an exercise
routine of once a day is inadequate and will result in a bad
situation, which both you and your dog will regret. An adult
collie even if kept inside much of the time needs to have access to
out-of-doors for bowel and urine deposits which can not be limited
to once a day episodes.
Q: Where can I find more information
about collies?
A: Check our Information Links page for additional information about
registration (AKC site) or about collies in general.
